Living in Meritxell, a spiritual symbol in Andorra
Located in the central area of Andorra, specifically halfway between the parishes of Encamp and Canillo, the village of Meritxell is a small population centre of just 62 inhabitants (figure collected by the Department of Statistics of Andorra at the end of 2017).
To access to this village, very well known both inside and outside the borders of Andorra for hosting the emblematic Meritxell Sanctuary, you have to drive along the main road 2 and, after having passed the Encamp parish, you have to take the first exit at the roundabout which is 2.5 km away from the Canillo entrance. Once this exit is taken, you should simply drive for a few meters along the Meritxell road (C2-230) to reach the centre of the village, dominated all the time by the majesty and beauty of the Meritxell Sanctuary.
Meritxell Sanctuary, one of Andorran most important assets
The Virgin of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra
Apart from its undoubted beauty and its peaceful and quiet essence, the village of Meritxell also stands out as one of the places with the greatest symbolic load for Andorran society. In fact, inside the sanctuary there is an image of the Virgin of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra. It is a polychrome replica of the original Romanesque piece that was destroyed during the fire that in 1972 hit the old Meritxell Sanctuary. Apart from causing the disappearance of the Romanesque carving of the Virgin of Meritxell, the fire of 1972 also completely destroyed the original sanctuary. A dramatic situation that forced the General Council to commission the construction of a second sanctuary, inaugurated in 1976 under the guidelines of the Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill Levi.
On May 13, 2014, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the pontifical declaration of the Virgin of Meritxell as patron saint of the valleys of Andorra, the Pope Francisco declared the Meritxell Sanctuary a Minor Basilica. Therefore, living in Meritxell means living in a place where spirituality, religion and history coexist in perfect harmony, a place where tranquility and peace reign and where time seems to stop before our eyes.
It is worth remembering that every 8 September the Meritxell Sanctuary hosts the main institutional and religious acts that are part of the national holiday of Andorra, popularly known as the Meritxell Day or the Feast of Nostra Senyora de Meritxell. In addition, during the celebration of this festive day all the shops remain closed, being one of the few days of the year in which the commercial activity of the Principality completely stops.
